Whether it’s a romantic weekend away or the trip of a lifetime, many of us want to wear our favourite pieces of jewellery, and that means thinking about how to carry our jewellery while travelling. From packing and transporting, to maintaining your jewellery while you're away, being mindful of how you care for your precious pieces will help to ensure they always sparkle and shine. Let’s explore some ways that you can be well prepared when next travelling with your jewellery, ensuring your gems stay safe and in perfect condition while you're off creating unforgettable memories.

How To Carry Jewellery While Travelling

Travelling with jewellery can make any trip feel a little more special, but it’s important to take the safety and care of these valuables into consideration, and that starts with how we pack our jewellery for travel. Here’s what you should do:

Invest In A Travel Jewellery Case

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your jewellery while travelling is to use a travel jewellery case. These cases are specifically designed to keep your pieces organised and prevent them from tangling, scratching, or getting lost in the shuffle of your luggage. Look for a case with multiple compartments and padding to secure each piece individually, ensuring that your delicate items, such as diamond pendants and rings, are safely stored. A hard-shell case will provide even more protection in your checked luggage.

Pack Smart And Limit Your Selection

While it’s tempting to bring all your favourite pieces away with you, the best way to travel with jewellery is by travelling with less. Limiting the amount of jewellery you pack reduces the risk of loss or damage, so opt for a few versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with multiple outfits. It’s a good idea to consider leaving high-value or sentimental pieces, such as family heirlooms, at home. Instead, bring decorative, lower quality pieces that can elevate your look but won’t leave you heartbroken if they get lost or damaged. For any special pieces like engagement rings or diamond earrings, keep them close to you in your carry-on.

Use Soft Pouches For Delicate Items

For more delicate pieces, such as fine chains or gemstone earrings, pop them in a soft pouch before placing them in your travel jewellery case to prevent scratches and tangling. Velvet or suede pouches are ideal for travelling with jewellery, they provide added protection for your jewellery’s finish, particularly for gold or silver items that are prone to tarnishing.

Or Use Small Zip-Lock Bags

If you don’t have pouches for carrying your precious jewellery while on holidays or travelling, small zip-lock bags can do the trick, too. Pill cases are also a simple way to store smaller items like wedding rings and earrings. These are not only lightweight and practical ways to protect and organise your jewellery, they allow you to quickly see and access your pieces, saving time when unpacking or getting dressed.

Be Mindful Of Security Checks

Airport security can be tricky when travelling with jewellery, especially if you’re wearing valuable items. It’s a good idea to take off your jewellery and place it in your carry-on bag, as metal detectors can sometimes flag metal pieces, causing unnecessary delays.

Carry Jewellery In Your Hand Luggage

Checked luggage can be lost, damaged, or mishandled, putting your jewellery at risk of theft or breakage. Keeping your jewellery close-by is a simple precaution that provides peace of mind and helps to ensure your precious pieces arrive safely and ready for you to wear.

Use Hotel Safes Or Secure Storage

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, always take advantage of the hotel safe to store your jewellery when you’re not wearing it. If your accommodation doesn’t offer a safe, consider purchasing a portable travel lockbox for peace of mind. Never leave jewellery out in the open, even in your hotel room, as it could be forgotten, lost, or stolen.

Clean Your Jewellery Regularly

Travelling with jewellery can expose it to a variety of elements such as sand, sunscreen, or humidity, all of which can dull its shine. It’s a good idea to carry a small jewellery cleaning cloth with you to gently polish your pieces after a long day out. For more thorough cleaning, a gentle soap and water solution can be used for most jewellery. And don’t forget to always dry your jewellery thoroughly before storing it away to prevent tarnishing.

Securely Close Clasps

While it sounds obvious, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings can easily get tangled, misplaced, or even lost if clasps aren’t fastened properly, especially when stored in travel cases or bags.

Avoid Wearing Jewellery In Water

Taking off your jewellery before swimming or showering on holidays is essential to prevent damage from chlorine, salt, and soap. Chlorine in pools can tarnish metals and weaken settings, while saltwater can corrode and dull the shine of both metals and gemstones. Soaps and shampoos can leave residue, creating a film that diminishes the sparkle of your jewellery. This simple precaution will protect your valuable pieces from long term damage.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Jewellery?

Signing papers

Some travel insurance companies do offer policies that provide coverage for jewellery, but it really depends on the type of policy you take out and the fine print of what it covers. Generally, jewellery is considered a valuable item, and many insurance plans include provisions for lost, stolen, or damaged valuables during your trip. However, there may be a limit on the amount reimbursed for individual items like jewellery, or your insurance company may require you to declare high-value pieces beforehand. It always pays to carefully review any policy before you purchase. Also, keep documentation and receipts of your jewellery, and report any losses promptly if needed.

Pack Smart, Protect Your Sparkle

Caring for your precious jewellery while travelling is all about being mindful, organised, and prepared, and following these tips will help to ensure your jewellery stays safe, clean, and beautiful. After all, each piece holds sentimental value and deserves to shine, no matter where life takes you.
